Hello Fellow Cruisers:
We are sorry to report that, due to ongoing drought conditions, the Dismal Swamp Canal (Alternate) ICW Route is closing. We have posted the official notice, as well as a note from a fellow cruiser who has thoroughly researched this situation, on the "North Carolina" page of the Salty Southeast Cruisers' Net. To check out this important info, go to http://www.CruisersNet.net, and then peruse the navigational buttons along the left side of the page, under the "Cruising News From" section. Click on the "North Carolina" button, and you will find the Dismal Swamp Canal Route notice at the top of the "North Carolina" page.
We have asked the good folks at the Dismal Swamp Canal Welcome Center to advise us IMMEDIATELY when there is a change in the canal's closed status. Stay tuned!
In the meantime, all vessels wending their way south down the Atlantic ICW will, by necessity, need to use the so-called, "North Carolina - Virginia Cut," by way of North Landing River, Currituck Sound, Coinjock and North River. This is a deep, reliable passage with two first class marinas available in Coinjock (not to mention two good restaurants at the same location). So, while many of use will miss the ecological fascination of the Dismal, at least the Fall, 2007 ICW Snowbird Migration will not be adversely affected!
Good luck and good cruising!
